భారత దేశపు ప్రఖ్యాత వైరాలజీ శాస్త్రవేత్త షాహీద్ జమీల్ INSACOG కిచెందిన సైంటిఫిక్ అడ్వయిజరీ గ్రూప్ అధ్యక్ష పదవికి రాజీనామా చేశారు.
INSACOG(Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomic Consortia (INSACOG) భారతదేశంలో తిరుగుతున్న వివిధ రకాల కరోనా వైరస్ ల జీనోమ్ సీక్సెన్సింగ్ చేసేందుకు ఏర్పాటయిన గ్రూప్ . ఇందులో పది లాబొరేటరీలు ఉన్నాయి.
ఈ కీలకమయిన పదవికి ఆయన ఆదివారంనాడు రాజీనామ చేశారు.రాజీనామాచేసినట్లు ధృవీకరించారు గాని,కారణాలను ఆయన వెల్లడించలేదు.
ఈ మధ్య ఆయన న్యూయార్క్ టైమ్స్ లొ How India Can Survive the Virus: Vaccine Alone Can’t Save the Country అని ఒక వ్యాసం రాస్తూ సాక్ష్యధారాల మీద ఆధారపడి ప్రభుత్వ విధానాలుండాలన్న శాస్త్రవేత్తలకు బాగా వ్యతిరేకత వస్తూ ఉంది అని రాశారు. ఈ వ్యాసం అచ్చయిన నాలుగయిదు రోజులకే ఆయన రాజీనామా చేయాల్సి వచ్చింది. దేశంలో వ్యాక్సిన్ ఇవ్వడం ఆశించినంత వేగంగా జరగడలేదేని వ్యాక్సిన్ పాయింట్లు పెంచాలని లేకపోతే, దేశం మీద మాయని మచ్చ ఏర్పడుతుందని ఆయన హెచ్చరించారు.
“…they (scientists) are facing stubborn resistance to evidence-based policymaking. On April 30, over 800 Indian scientists appealed to the prime minister, demanding access to the data that could help them further study, predict and curb this virus.
Decision-making based on data is yet another casualty, as the pandemic in India has spun out of control. The human cost we are enduring will leave a permanent scar.”అని హెచ్చరిక చేశారు.
భారత దేశం అనుసరిస్తున్న కోవిడ్ విధానాల పట్ల ఆయన అసంతృప్తి తో ఉన్నారు. అప్రమత్తంగా ఉండాల్సిన సయంలో కొద్దిగా కోవిడ్ తగ్గగానే అదేదో ఘనవిజయమన్నట్లు పండగ చేసుకోవడం, కోవిడ్ ని జయించినట్లుగా ప్రపంచమంతా చాటింపువేసుకోవడం జరిగింది. పరిస్థితిని నిర్లక్ష్యం చేయడం వల్లే కోవిడ్ రెండు వేవ్ ఇంత తీవ్రంగా ఉందని ఆయన అభిప్రాయం వ్యక్తం చేస్తూ వచ్చారు.
“The government was busy telling us that the endgame was near, congratulating itself for Conquering “Corona” and boasting to the world.” అని ఆయన దెక్కన్ హెరాల్డ్ కు చెప్పారు.
“The surge is brought on by two things: a) complacency due to this narrative and b) more infectious variants. The interim period was spent in elections ignoring preparation for a second wave. Even the available containment facilities were dismantled,”అని ఆయన చెప్పారు.
