Karnataka will be going under lockdown for 14 days from Tuesday. The decision has been taken after a high-level meeting chaired by chief minister BS Yeddyurappa.
The lockdown will start from 10 pm on April 27, announced Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa.
However, shops selling essential items and groceries will be allowed to remain open between 6 am and 10 am. Construction, manufacturing, and agriculture sectors will be allowed to function. Public transport will remain shut.
As for Alcohol, home delivery will be allowed. The state cabinet also resolved to write to the election commission to put on hold all upcoming elections for three months.
The high-level meeting was prompted by the unusual spike in the corona cases being registered in the state. According the state government as many as 34,000 positive cases have been recorded on Sunday. The state has now 1.6 lakh active cases with majority coming from Bengaluru.
Addressing media after the meeting, chief minister Yediyurappa sai public transportation including RTC buses and Metro rail will not function/
“We have come to the decision after speaking to all ministers and experts, “ the CM said.
He also announced that vaccination will be free from people between the ages of 18-45 years. “For those above 45 years, the union government will provide vaccination free. From April 27 evening, stringent measures against the violators of lockdown will be in place,” the CM said.
Assuring that there would be no shortage of Oxygen in the state, the CM said that the centre had agreed to dispatch 300 MTs to 800 MTs of Oxygen to the state.
