Karnataka Elections : Highlights

Association for Democratic Reforms and Karnataka Election Watch have analysed the vote share for the 224 constituencies in the Karnataka Assembly Elections, 2023. Summery and highlights of the analysis.:

Vote Share of Winners

  • The winners of the Karnataka State Assembly elections, 2023 won by an average of 50 % of total votes polled. In the 2018 elections winners won by an average of 48% of total votes polled.

 

  • 113(50.45%) winners won with 50% and above of the total votes polled in their constituency.
  • 111(49.55%) winners won with less than 50% of the total votes polled in their constituency.

  • 63(51%) out of 123 winners with declared criminal cases have won with a vote share of 50% and above.
  • 111(51%) out of 218 crorepati winners have won with a vote share of 50% and above.

Margin of Victory

  • winners have won with a margin of victory of less than 1000 votes.
  • 5 winners have won with more than 40% margin of victory.

Winners with Declared Criminal Cases and their Margin of Victory

  • 63 out of 123 winners with declared criminal cases have won against a runner up with a clean background.
  • Among these 63 winners, 35 winners have won with more than 10% margin of victory.
  • Among these, B.Z.Zameer Ahmed Khan (INC) from Chamrajapet constituency won with 43% margin of victory.

Crorepati Winners and their Margin of Victory

  • 7 out of 218 crorepati winners have won against a non-crorepati runners up.
  • Among these 7 winners, 2 winners have won with more than 30% margin of victory.
  • Among these, Balachandra Laxmanrao Jarkiholi (BJP) from Arabhavi constituency won with 38% margin of victory.

Performance of Women Winners

  • Among the 224 winners, 10 are women.
  • All of them won with 35% and above of vote share in their constituencies.
  • Among the women winners, Bhagirathi Murulya (BJP) from Sullia (SC) Constituency has won with the highest vote share, i.e. 57.01% in her constituency and 18.74% margin of victory.

Performance of Re-elected Winners

  • Out of total 94 re-elected winners, none have won with less than 20% of vote share in their respective constituencies. 48(51%) have won with more than 50% of vote share.
  • 49(52%) re-elected winners have won with less than 10% margin of victory whereas has won with more than 50% margin of victory.

NOTA

  •  The NOTA button instated by the ECI in 2013 gave the voters an option of rejecting all the candidates in their constituency. Out of 3, 91, 54,967 votes polled in Karnataka Assembly, 2023, 2, 69, 763 (0.69%) were polled for NOTA.
