The Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) Tirupati, set up in 2015 as a part of the Andhra Pradesh Re-organization Plan, has reached yet another landmark in its six years of existence.
The second batch of students who had joined the Five-year BS-MS degree in Sciences in August 2016 have completed all the academic requirements and have been conferred their Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees in the Second Convocation of the Institute held in hybrid mode (partially in-person) on 25th August 2021.
In view of the current pandemic situation, the Institute conducted the 2nd Convocation of the Institute in hybrid mode with members of the Senate and other limited participants in person and the rest joining the function online.
Professor K. Vijay Raghavan, the Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India was the Chief Guest and delivered his Convocation address online to the graduating students, their parents, and distinguished invitees. Prof. VijayRaghavan is a Distinguished Professor at the National Centre of Biological Sciences (NCBS), Tata Institute of Fundamental Research Bangalore (TIFR), and was the NCBS Director till 2013. Prof. VijayRaghavan is a Fellow of the Indian Science Academies, the Royal Society, the Academy of Medical Sciences (UK), and a Foreign Associate of the US National Academy of Sciences. He was awarded the Padma Shri by the Government of India in 2013.
Prof J B Joshi, Emeritus Scientist, Institute of Chemical Technology, Mumbai who is also the Chairperson of IISER Tirupati Board of Governors presided over the function. Prof. Joshi is a Fellow of the Indian Science Academies, and a member of National Academy of Engineering, U.S.A., Prof. Joshi received the third highest civilian honour, the Padma Bhushan, in 2014 for his services to the field of Chemical Engineering.
Prof K N Ganesh, Director, IISER Tirupati presented his report on the academic and research achievements of the Institute.
Sixty-Four students of the 2016 batch were conferred BS-MS degree and one student was conferred with BS Degree in the convocation held at the permanent campus of the Institute, which is coming up at Yerpedu in Chittoor district.
Ms. VC Thamarai Valli was awarded Institute Gold Medal for securing the highest CGPA, Mr. Omkar Vinayak Nippanikar & Ms. Veena Shankar Avadhani were awarded Institute Silver Medals for securing the second-highest CGPA in 2021 and Mr. Bhabesh Kumar Tripathy was awarded Institute Prize for Best Graduating Student in 2021 in the Convocation.
