3. The Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN) scheme: PM Modi virtually transferred about Rs 19,500 crore to over 9.75 crore beneficiaries farmers under the government’s PM-KISAN scheme on 09 Aug. The govt has so far transferred nine installments amounting around Rs 1.57 lakh crore in this scheme.

13. Commodore Kasargod Patnashetti Gopal Rao, a 1971 war hero and recipient of the Mahavir Chakra, Vishist Seva Medal breathed his last on 08 Aug (Sunday). He was 94. The naval veteran died of age-related illness and is survived by two daughters and a son.

NTERNATIONAL NEWS

1. PM Modi presided over a UN Security Council (UNSC) Open Debate via video conferencing on 09 Aug. The agenda of the discussion was: Enhancing Maritime Security – A Case for International Cooperation.

2. PM Modi said that, the sea is our shared heritage. Our sea routes are the lifeline of international trade, but Sea routes are being misused for piracy & terrorism.

Calling for a framework to increase maritime cooperation, PM laid down a five-point agenda during his address:-
(a) Removal of barriers to legitimate maritime trade, He termed this principle as ‘SAGAR’ Security and Growth for All in the Region.

(b) Resolution of maritime disputes peacefully in accordance with international law: Citing the example of the resolution of India’s maritime dispute with Bangladesh.

(c) Fight threats from natural disasters, non-state actors: our White Shipping Information Fusion Centre. We have provided support for hydrographic surveying and training of maritime security personnel to several countries.

(d) Conservation of marine resources: it is very important that we keep our maritime environment free of pollutants like plastic waste and oil spills.

(e) Promoting responsible maritime connectivity

3. He also said that we can develop a global roadmap for maritime security cooperation based on these five principles.

4. A High Court judge in London on 09 Aug (Monday) granted fugitive diamond merchant Nirav Modi permission to appeal against a magistrates’ court order in favour of extradition to India to face charges of fraud and money laundering before the Indian courts on mental health & human rights grounds.

5. Nirav Modi is the subject of two sets of criminal proceedings, with the CBI case relating to a large-scale fraud upon PNB through loan agreements, and the Enforcement Directorate (ED) case relating to the laundering of the proceeds of that fraud.

1. *Medal Winners of Olympics were Felicitated:* Neeraj Chopra, India’s first athletics gold medallist at the Olympics, silver medallist Ravi Kumar Dahiya & bronze medallists Bajrang Punia, Lovlina Borgohain & the Indian men’s hockey team were all felicitated by Sports Minister Anurag Thakur and Law Minister and former Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju at the Ashoka Hotel in Delhi. The ministers lauded the Indian women’s hockey team’s historic finish and all others who gave their all in Tokyo. PV Sindhu & Chanu did not attend the ceremony as they had arrived earlier and are currently at their home bases.

2. President Ram Nath Kovind praised golfer Aditi Ashok who finished 4th in the Tokyo Olympics for an impressive display of grit and skills. In a tweet, the President said, she has taken Indian golfing to new heights.
