Telangana government is planning to develop airports in six places to improve the connectivity in the state. The government has reportedly sought the help of Airports of Authority of India (AAI) to prepare detailed project reports. Of the six, three are greenfield while the rest brownfield airports.
According to media reports, the airports will come up at Mamnoor (10km from Warangal), Kothagudem, Adilabad district headquarters, Basanthnagar near Peddapalli, Jakranpalli near Nizamabad and Gudibanda near Mahabubnagar.
The officials indicated that the airports planned at Warangal, Kothaguden and Adilabad are feasible.
The Brownfield airports will come in Warangal, Adilabad, and Peddapalli, where existing airstrips will be upgraded to airports. The Warangal airstrip has an area of about 706 acres with two runways. The Peddapalli airstrip has an area of 288 acres. In Adilabad airstrip has 356 acres which the ministry of defense wants to takeover. But the Telangana government wants a civilian airport to come at the district headquarters as the defense department is bound to impose restrictions on the activities.
