A Delhi court Friday awarded life imprisonment, for the remainder of life, to Unnave rape accused Kuldip Singh Sengar.
He was convicted for raping a woman in Unnav, Uttar Pradesh, in 2017. He was an MLA from BJP. Following the case, BJP expelled him from the party.
District Judge Dharmesh Sharma also imposed a fine of Rs 25 lakh in the case. The rape victim would get Rs 10 lakh as compensation.
The charge against him was that he had raped the girl who had come to him to seek a job. The court also praised the girl for pursuing the case even though the perpetrator was a powerful politician and an MLA from the ruling party.
The court convicted him under the IPC and the Posco act for an offense by a public servant committing penetrative sexual assault against a child after holding the victim to be a minor.
Following charges of inaction by UP police, the case later was transferred to CBI. Based on the CBI report the court framed charges against Sengar and Shashi Singh, the co-accused in the case, who was given benefit of doubt and acquitted.
