The Supreme Court on Tuesday has reinstated Alok Verma as the director of CBI. The Court has set aside the order issued by union government on October 23, and the Central Vigilance Commission decision to strip CBI director Alok Verma of his powers as head of India’s premier investigation agency.
A bench of Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi and justrices Sanjay Kishan and Justice KM Joseph ruled that the action against Verma could not have been taken without clear sanction from the high-powered selection committee headed by none other than Prime Minister himself.
The Judgement has been pronounced by Justice Kaul. The judgement said the panel comprising chief justice of India and the leader of Opposition, would meet in a week to decide upon the fate of Verma. The Court, however, restrained Verma from taking any policy decision.
